Food plots

Food plots can be useful for deer, turkeys, quail, and even waterfowl! They are a lot of work to grow and maintain but they are worth it if you keep a lot of deer on your land. They best brands of food plot seed are Evolved Harvest and Bio Logic. Evolved makes a seed called Throw and Grow that will grow about any where and you can plant it by only using yard tools. Bio Logic is good because it will last for years if you plant and maintain it the right way. We planted some Bio Logic in the river bottoms one year and it didn't work because the soil was too sandy for it to grow. Both these brands make all kinds of products. I am going to plant a clover food plot this year for turkeys at my turkey hunting spot. I am also going to plant a few throw and grow plots in different places on my deer hunting land. I hope it will hold lots of deer and turkeys on my land.

Realtree Camo

Realtree camo came out with a new camo pattern this year called Realtree Xtra! It is meant for deer hunting in tree stands mainly but it would probably work for duck hunting too. They had a good camo pattern called Realtree AP (all purpose) but I guess they thought that one wasn't very good any more. I really like this new camo because it looks like it can work any where and it looks cool! I have been wanting to get a Scent Lok jacket and pants suit for bow hunting for bow hunting and now that Xtra is out I think I will get one. Under Armour also has some cool new stuff that is Realtree Xtra. There is also a Realtree Xtra Green that could be used during early bow season or turkey season. It is pretty much the same thing as Realtree Xtra but is has a little green in it, but I am color blind so I wouldn't really be able to tell the difference between them! I think they will be a big success for people who deer, turkey, or even waterfowl hunt!!!

Hunting Boots

There are a lot of different kinds of hunting boots on the market for people to but. Some are rubber, some are neoprene, and some are made of rubber and neoprene combined together. There are also a lot of different kinds of camo patterns that boots can come in. My favorite two favorite kinds of boots are Muck and Lacrosse boots. Muck boots are really comfortable and are extremely light. They are made of half rubber and the top half is neoprene. Lacrosse boots are tough and reliable so they will last for years. I have had both and I have good and bad things to say about both. I had a pair of Field Blazer Muck boots and they were great for a couple of years but after a while they lost their comfort and they stared to fall apart. I also had a pair of Lacrosse boots and they were really tough but they were kind of heavy were too warm to wear during early bow season. But both of the boots were pretty good!!

Layout Blinds

Layout blinds can be useful during waterfowl hunting in a lot of situations. They are easily hid in any landscape, fold able, and they can fit on you r back! There are many diffident brands that make layout blinds and all of them would probably be pretty good. I have one from Rogers Sporting Goods called the Goose-buster. It is really roomy and its pretty light to carry on my back. I have also heard that Green Head Gear makes some good layout blinds. They also make snow covers and gillie suits for about every layout blind there is. Having a regular duck blind is good but layout blinds will be your best option for hiding if you have to walk a long way to your hunting spot. I am planning on buying a few more layout binds in the future just because they are so awesome!!

Savage Axis

This weekend I bought a Savage Axis rifle for deer hunting. I got it in 308 caliber so it will put a deer down! I it is extremely light but it kicks a lot, but I don't really mind recoil that much. It even looks really cool, which  is also a bonus. I got it in black, but it took me a while to find a black Axis because most of the gun stores around here only have it in camo. It came with a Bushnell scope but I so don't think it is a very good one so I am going to buy a Nikon one pretty soon. Overall it is a pretty awesome gun!!

Here is a 308 bullet compared to a 223 bullet.

Decoys

My favorite brand of decoys for duck or goose hunting is Green Head Gear. They are extremely durable and  very realistic. They come in floating and field models for about every type duck or goose there is! They have the original kind or the Pro Grade kind which is made by Avery Outdoors. They Pro Grade ones are a little more expensive but they are probably a little better than the original. GHG  makes more products than decoys too. They make layout blinds, dog blinds, goose flags, hunting clothes, decoys, decoy bags, and decoy weights. So GHG is probably one of my favorite brands of hunting products in general.

Spring Turkey Season

As most hunters know, this time of the year is getting close to spring turkey season. It is one of my favorite seasons because its a challenge to get a big tom turkey in close enough to take a shot. You also have to call them which is tough because tom turkeys are kind of like big whitetail bucks, the older they are the harder they are to hunt and call. Turkeys are constantly being hunted by humans so they can recognize the sound of a hunter calling pretty easily. So having a hen and a Jake decoy in the field next to you will be helpful. They also have very good eyesight so you can't move when they get in close. Wearing a gillie suit and painting your face will help you stay hidden too.

Under Armour Clothes

My favorite brand of clothing for hunting is Under Armour! It is comfortable, quiet, and it is available in scent control for deer hunting. Most of their clothes come in all different camo patterns, like my favorites Max-4 and  Realtree Xtra. They have almost every type of clothes that there are: scent control base layers, camo hoodies, bow hunting jackets, and warm clothes for deer and water fowl hunting. Under Armour clothes are pretty expensive bu they are worth it because of the comfort fit and quality.

Benelli Shotguns

My favorite brand of shotgun for waterfowl hunting is Benelli. They are really reliable and some of them aren't very expensive. They are made in Italy so they have to be imported. The two best shotguns Benelli makes are the Super Black Eagle II and the Super Vinci. They are about $1,700 each but they are worth it. My dad dropped his in the bottom of a lake when we were duck hunting, picked it up, and it worked perfectly. He and I have both had Benelli Super Novas for about four years and the only problem I had with mine is part of the top sight fell out, which i fixed easily. Benelli also makes tactical shotguns and rifles for police and the Military.

Spring Conservation snow goose season

This time of the year is the Conservation snow geese season. This season for waterfowl is different because you can use electronic calls and there is no limit to how many you can kill, because they are so overpopulated. You can also take the plugs out of your shotguns or get extended magazines to knock down more birds without reloading because a lot of the time hundreds of geese are coming in at once.

But one of the negative things about snow goose hunting is it takes so many decoys to hunt them. It would be really expensive to have two or three thousand full body decoys out, so most people just use sack decoys instead. If you did use sack decoys, you would have to have blue geese in your spread also to make it more realistic because snow geese get scared pretty easily. So if you are sad that duck season is over this time of the year, then snow geese would be a good thing to hunt.

Duck Hunting Spots

Hello, my name is Peyton and this is my blog. It is mostly about waterfowl hunting but I might post things about hunting other stuff too because I live in Missouri and all there is to do is hunt........My first blog is what type of place is better for duck hunting: over dry fields or over water?

In my opinion, both can be really good at times. In winter when the all of the water is froze over, then obviously hunting over fields would be the only thing to do. Also when your are hunting over water you have to have a lot more decoys and you also have to have motion to make them look real. So field hunting might be a little easier. But pond hunting might give you a little more success because water is probably more appealing to a duck than a field at times. Just remember you will always have more luck if you go to where the ducks are already at.
